The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recently said “no” to bonuses for senior agency officials who oversee disability claims, and Congress is considering a broader five-year bonus ban. The backlog of disability claims has soared over the past three years, and the VA cited that failure in denying bonus payments. It’s about time. In 2011, the number of disability claims lingering for more than 125 days more than doubled, from under 200,000 to nearly 500,000. But the VA that year awarded top executives $2.8 million. In mid-April, the number of claims lingering more than 125 days hit 590,000. That’s not a performance that deserves a reward.
