The owner of an ethanol plant near Sutherland has agreed to pay $10,000 to settle concerns about pollution at the plant under previous owners.
Midwest Renewable Energy LLC general manager Troy Gavin said Friday the lawsuit the Environmental Protection Agency filed against the company earlier this week is part of the settlement process.
Midwest Renewable Energy also agreed to remedy all the violations of pollution rules that EPA officials found.
Gavin said the company has been negotiating with the EPA for about four years. But he said most of the violations occurred before Midwest Renewable Energy bought the plant in 2003 from the bank that foreclosed on the original owner.
